Story of Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga
According to the Shiva Purana, Lord Ganesha was married before Kartikeya, due to which Kartikeya got angry. He went to Kraunch Mountain. All the gods tried to console him, but in vain. Eventually, Shiva and Parvati traveled to the mountain themselves, but Kartikeya turned them away. He was very hurt to see his son in such a state, and Shiva took the form of Jyotirlinga and resided on the mountain by the name of Mallikarujan. Mallika means Parvati, while Arjun is another name for Shiva. People believe that just by looking at the top of this mountain, one is liberated from all sins and freed from the vicious cycle of life and death.
