At the Critics Choice Awards on Sunday night, “Oppenheimer” maintained its remarkable streak of wins, taking home eight major honors, including best film, best director for Christopher Nolan, and best supporting actor for Robert Downey Jr.Critics Choice Awards 2024
This marks the end of a whirlwind week for the series, which also topped the Golden Globes last Sunday and has since received significant nominations from the acting, producers and directors’ guilds. In case it wasn’t evident, we are dealing with a very strong Oscar front-runner.
Even though “Oppenheimer” took home the greatest Critics Choice Award prizes, “Barbie,” the movie’s box office rival, led the field in nominations with an unprecedented 18 honors going into the ceremony. Six awards were won by Greta Gerwig’s smash comedy, including ones for production design, costumes, and the song “I’m Just Ken.” However, because the majority of the awards were revealed in the margins prior to a commercial break, host Chelsea Handler “went rogue” toward the end of the show and asked Gerwig and star Margot Robbie to speak anyway.
Robbie was truly surprised by the compassion. She said, “When everyone is saying, ‘Oh, this is so surprising,’ this was not part of the show and is actually unexpected.”
The lead winners in four highly contested categories took home the night’s film acting trophies, which went to actors who had already won Golden Globes.
Emma Stone said as much as she accepted her best-actress award for “Poor Things,” saying, “I’m going to be honest, I’m in full-blown shock,” before praising the actresses Lily Gladstone from “Killers of the Flower Moon” and the other contenders. Because this is so absurd, I had nothing intelligent to say.Critics Choice Awards 2024
Paul Giamatti won the main actor prize for his performance in “The Holdovers,” where he played a history teacher with dysphoria. After winning his Golden Globe, the actor joked about his much-discussed trip to the California burger joint In N Out, saying, “I didn’t think my week could go any better than going viral for eating a cheeseburger.” Before giving a heartfelt speech in honor of his late father, A. Bartlett Giamatti, who served as commissioner of Major League Baseball.
Giamatti’s co-star Da’Vine Joy Randolph and “Oppenheimer” foil Downey earned the supporting prizes. Downey took advantage of the occasion to recite some of the worst criticism he has ever faced in his career. One of the most talked-about parts of the evening, though, occurred early in the program when Handler made a reference to her ex-boyfriend Jo Koy’s poorly received Golden Globes speech, in which he ridiculed his writers after his jokes turned sour.Critics Choice Awards 2024
After cracking wise about her crush on Martin Scorsese, Handler told the crowd with a laugh “Thank you for laughing at that. It was written by my writers.
